BYD has reportedly paid the Bahia state government 2.87.8 billion reais ($58 million), purchased a total of 4.6 million sq m of factory space。
Part of the complex is the former Ford Brazil plant, which BYD will build from scratch, and suppliers will use the complex's old facilities to help produce new car parts.。
BYD plans to build 26 new facilities, including a new production warehouse and test track, which will cover an area of about 1 mile.。
Citing statements from the Bahia state government and BYD, the report said the complex is expected to be operational between the end of 2024 and early 2025, with the first phase expected to have an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles.。According to reports, the first production models include BYD Dolphin, Song Plus, Yuan Plus and Dolphin Mini。Yuan Plus is known as Atto 3 in several international markets and Dolphin Mini is known as Seagull。
In October 2022, BYD signed a letter of intent with the state government of Bahia to establish a vehicle production facility in an industrial zone left over from Ford's closure of a plant on the outskirts of El Salvador, the capital of Bahia.。
The Bahia state government said at the time that BYD will produce electric bus and truck chassis, as well as electric and hybrid vehicles at the three plants, and will also process Brazilian lithium for car batteries exported to China。
On July 4, 2023, BYD and the state government of Bahia announced that the company would establish a large manufacturing base complex consisting of three factories in Brazil.。
The industrial complex includes a production plant focusing on electric bus and truck chassis, a new energy bus production plant, and a processing plant focusing on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery materials.。
The new energy passenger car production line will be able to produce pure electric models and plug-in hybrid models, with a planned annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles。
BYD said at the time that the lithium iron phosphate battery material processing plant will use local port resources to meet the growing demand for new energy products in the global market.。
According to BYD's previous statement, the industrial park has a total investment of 3 billion reais and is expected to create more than 5,000 local jobs.。
