South Korean lawmakers call for huge fines for Upbit

Internet reports that South Korea's Democratic Party member Min Byung-deok said on the 17th that virtual asset exchange Upbit should be fined up to 183 trillion won for large-scale violations of the Customer Identification System (KYC) and other regulations. An investigation by the Financial Information Analysis Institute (FIU) found approximately 9.57 million legal violations in Upbit, including 9.34 million KYC violations, especially the use of old images when identity re-verification was needed. Although FIU has imposed a three-month suspension of some business and penalties on 10 people on Upbit, it has not yet decided on the amount of the fine. Senator Min criticized this as reflecting the lack of internal control of the exchange and the dereliction of duty of the regulatory agency.
