Xpeng recalls 47,490 P7+ electric sedans in rare move for Chinese EV makers
Xpeng is recalling 47,490 P7+ electric sedans due to a potential failure in the steering assist system.
- Some vehicles within the recall may experience steering assist failure due to poor contact in the steering assist motor sensor wiring harness.
- From January to August, the P7+ delivered 55,039 units, accounting for 20.26 percent of Xpeng's total deliveries during this period.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) is recalling tens of thousands of P7+ electric sedans, a rare case among Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers in the past several years.
The company will recall a total of 47,490 P7+ electric sedans produced between August 20, 2024, and April 27, 2025, starting September 15, according to an announcement today on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.
Some vehicles within the recall scope may experience fluctuating steering sensor signals due to poor contact in the power steering motor sensor wiring harness.
This could cause the steering malfunction warning light to illuminate and result in steering assist failure, posing a safety hazard, the announcement said.
Xpeng will replace the steering assembly with an improved version free of charge for affected vehicles to eliminate the safety risk.
This marks a rare recall by a domestic EV maker in recent years, a practice typically seen only among foreign automakers like Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
The P7+ was officially launched on November 7, 2024, with cumulative deliveries reaching 72,546 units by the end of August, including 4,847 units in August alone, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The model starts at RMB 186,800 ($26,230), a price point viewed as competitive and a key contributor to Xpeng's sustained strong sales over the past year.
From January to August, the P7+ delivered 55,039 units, accounting for 20.26 percent of Xpeng's total deliveries during this period, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The mid-to-large-size electric sedan measures 5,056 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,512 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.
The P7+ does not feature any LiDAR, marking Xpeng's first departure from the sensor after years of use, shifting its smart driving system toward a pure vision solution similar to Tesla's.
Earlier today, local media outlet Cailian reported that Xpeng will launch an extended-range version of the P7+ in 2026 that will feature a battery supporting 5C charging rate, with an expected range of 400 kilometers.
