EU "hands an olive branch" to Trump administration to abandon its digital tax plan

Online reports, Politico reported that the European Commission has abandoned plans to tax digital companies, a move marking a major victory for U.S. President Trump and U.S. technology giants such as Apple (AAPL.O) and Meta Platforms(META.O). Documents show that as trade talks between Europe and the United States enter the final sprint, Brussels has removed the digital tax option from its seven-year fiscal plan launched in 2028. Senior EU officials are in key negotiations on the budget plan, with only days left before the budget is announced. This policy shift is a major shift for the EU-in May this year, the budget document discussed by the 27 EU commissioners also mentioned the idea of paying EU debt by taxing technology giants. This sharp turn may be a strategic move by the EU. Currently, the EU is eager to obtain favorable trade terms with the United States, and Trump has previously threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs on Canada to counter his digital tax policy.
