Brazilian president says he will respond to US tariffs in a reciprocal manner
Internet reports that Brazilian President Lula issued a statement in response to U.S. President Trump's announcement on July 9 local time that he would impose a 50% tariff on products imported from Brazil starting from August 1, saying that "the United States has a trade deficit with Brazil" is purely false information. U.S. official statistics show that in the past 15 years, the United States has achieved a cumulative surplus of US$410 billion in trade in goods and services with Brazil. In view of this, any unilateral tariff increase measures will be responded in a reciprocal manner in accordance with Brazil's Commercial Reciprocity Act. Lula emphasized that national sovereignty, mutual respect and firm defense of the interests of the Brazilian people have always been Brazil's core norms in handling international relations.
