Trump sends conflicting signals on US dollar policy
According to Internet reports, Trump sent mixed signals when talking about the US dollar policy on Friday. On the one hand, he emphasized that "a weak US dollar will never be supported", and on the other hand, he talked about the economic benefits of a low exchange rate to US manufacturing. "I would never say that I like low exchange rates. I'm the kind of person who likes a strong dollar, but a weak dollar makes you make more money." The statement comes amid widespread speculation in the foreign exchange market that the government is proactively seeking a weaker dollar. When asked if he was worried about the continued decline of the dollar, Trump responded that "I'm a person who likes a strong dollar," but he immediately added that "I won't sleep at night because of it." Trump also specifically mentioned that manufacturing companies are benefiting from a weak dollar. "One consequence of a strong dollar is it looks good, but no one comes to travel, you can't sell factories, trucks, nothing. A strong dollar is good for controlling inflation, that's all. And we don't have inflation at all. We have eliminated inflation."
