The FDIC warns 68 U.S. banks are in danger of bankruptcy, with lenders facing $364 billion in unrealized losses
Online reports that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said in its quarterly bank overview report that the number of U.S. banks on its "problem bank list" rose to 68 in the third quarter. As of the third quarter of this year, banks 'book losses reached US$364 billion, mainly due to banks' involvement in the residential real estate and treasury bond markets. Unrealized losses represent the difference between the price paid by banks for securities and the current market value of those assets. In the third quarter, bank book losses fell by $148.9 billion from $512.9 billion in the second quarter.
