Insider: Besent urges Trump not to remove Powell

Internet reports that according to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter said that U.S. Treasury Secretary Basent privately suggested to Trump in recent days that he should not try to remove Federal Reserve Chairman Powell. Bessent's reasons focus on several themes: the possible impact on the economy and markets, the prospect that the Fed could already cut interest rates later this year, and the possible political and legal obstacles to such a move. Besent believes firing Powell is unnecessary because of the good economy, the positive response of markets to the president's policies, and the fact that Fed officials have signaled that they may cut interest rates twice before the end of the year. If Powell is fired before his term ends, Powell may file a lawsuit, and the lawsuit may drag on until next spring, when Powell's term ends. Besent also pointed out that Governor Kugler's term will end in January next year and Powell's term will end in May, which will allow Trump to have one or two job vacancies to fill early next year. Besent's caution contrasts with that of other government officials who are considering more aggressive strategies. Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he found Besent "reassuring." (Jin Shi)
