U.S. Treasury Secretary Basent said countries that have not reached the agreement will face tariffs starting August 1, but denied that the date is a "new deadline."

Internet reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessant said on Sunday that for countries that have not reached trade agreements with the Trump administration, tariffs announced in April this year will come back into effect on August 1. "President Trump will be writing to some of our trading partners saying that if you don't take action, on August 1, your tariffs will return to April 2 levels," Besent said. He said on August 1, countries that have not reached an agreement will "receive a letter." Besent rejected the idea of August 1 as another new tariff deadline, but an August date would still give trading partners more time to renegotiate tariff rates. "What we're saying is when things happen, if you want to speed it up, get started, and if you want to go back to the old tax rate, that's your choice," Besant said. In April this year, Trump announced a 90-day suspension of high tariffs on most major trading partners. The tariff suspension will expire on Wednesday (July 9).
