Musk's expanded use of Grok at the Ministry of Efficiency raises privacy concerns

Online reports that Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team is expanding the use of his artificial intelligence chat robot Grok in the U.S. federal government to analyze data, which may violate conflicts of interest laws and put sensitive information on millions of Americans at risk, according to three people familiar with the matter. Such use of Grok could fuel concerns among privacy advocates and others that as Trump reshuffles the U.S. bureaucracy, Musk's government efficiency team appears to be abandoning long-standing protections for Data Mask. One of the three people familiar with DOGE's activities said Musk's team is using a customized version of the Grok chatbot. The person familiar with the matter said the move was clearly aimed at allowing DOGE to sift through data more effectively. "They ask questions, ask it to prepare the report and give data analysis." The second and third people familiar with the matter said that although Grok had not yet been approved within the Department of Homeland Security, DOGE staff also told Homeland Security officials to use it.
