Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm will go on trial on July 14, and the U.S. Department of Justice withdraws some charges

Internet reports that Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm will be tried on July 14. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said on Thursday that it will not advance charges related to some "unlicensed money transfer business", but will still file lawsuits for "money laundering","partially unlicensed transfer" and "conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act." DeFi Education Fund said: "Although this is consistent with an April 2025 Justice Department memorandum calling for an end to 'prosecution instead of supervision' and a stop to prosecuting registration violations, this does not fully correct the Justice Department's mistakes in this case." Peter Van Valkenburgh, executive director of the Coin Center, also expressed disappointment: "This criminal law provision has a vague relationship with the Bank Secrecy Act. The principle of lenient interpretation should be invoked to rule in favor of the defendant."
