Bitcoin Core will unilaterally lift the OP_RETURN restriction "

On May 6, it was reported that Bitcoin Core developers have decided to remove restrictions on transaction data in the next network upgrade, so that more data can be included in a more effective way. Bitcoin developer Greg Sanders announced on GitHub on May 5:"The next version of Bitcoin Core will default to relay and mine transactions with OP_RETURN output exceeding 80 bytes and allow any number of outputs." In response, critics said the proposal was introduced without a proper consensus process. Marty Bent, managing partner of Ten31 Fund, said: "There is currently no consensus on OP_RETURN." According to reports, OP_RETURN transaction outputs, which allow small amounts of data to be stored on the blockchain, became popular during the Bitcoin ordinal boom in early 2024. Unlike regular transaction outputs, the OP_RETURN output is not expendable and does not add to unspent transaction outputs (UTXO).(Cointelegraph)
