The testimony of key witnesses in the Roman Storm case is questioned, and the defense may apply for a retrial
Defense lawyers are considering applying for a retrial in the criminal money laundering case of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm because the "victim" testimony could mislead the jury, Internet reported. Hanfeng Ling, a fraud victim, said that $250,000 of his defrauded funds flowed through Tornado Cash, but multiple online analysts, including MyCrypto founder Taylor Monahan and investigator ZachXBT, pointed out that Ling's funds did not enter the privacy agreement, but were mistakenly tracked. The defense pointed out that the U.S. government failed to verify the flow of funds before the trial, and FBI witnesses admitted that they were not required to investigate the transaction path. Although prosecutors said they had IRS witnesses who could testify that funds did flow to Tornado Cash "within a few jumps," Judge Failla said he could not determine for himself whether the transaction trace was true. The case reflects that technical errors and misleading testimony in on-chain evidence collection may have a significant impact on the trial outcome.
