Nio delivers record 31,305 cars in Aug as Onvo and Firefly both hit new highs

Onvo delivered 16,434 units in August, becoming Nio Inc's highest-selling model in a single month with a 175.00 percent increase from July.

  • Onvo delivered 16,434 units in August, becoming Nio Inc's highest-selling model for a single month, a 175.00 percent increase from July.
  • Firefly delivered 4,346 units in August, an 83.69 percent increase from July.

Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) achieved record monthly deliveries last month, driven by strong performance from two sub-brands, particularly Onvo.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker delivered 31,305 vehicles in August, surpassing the previous record of 31,138 set in December last year, according to data released today.

This represents a 55.16 percent year-on-year increase and a 48.95 percent rise from July.

The robust performance was primarily driven by its sub-brands Onvo and Firefly, both of which achieved record highs in August.

Onvo delivered 16,434 units in August, up 175.00 percent from July.

Firefly delivered 4,346 units in August, up 83.69 percent from July.

Meanwhile, the main Nio brand continued to show weakness, delivering 10,525 units in August -- down 47.83 percent year-on-year and down 16.96 percent month-on-month.

From January to August, Nio Inc delivered 166,472 vehicles, a 29.95 percent year-on-year increase. To date, Nio Inc has accumulated total deliveries of 838,036 vehicles.

From January to August, Onvo delivered 54,272 vehicles, while Firefly delivered 14,555 vehicles.

Onvo's strong performance was primarily driven by the L90, a large SUV that was launched on July 31 and began deliveries the following day on August 1.

The model delivered 10,575 units in August, making it the fastest model in Nio Inc's history to surpass the 10,000-unit mark.

The L90 boasts strong specifications and aggressive pricing -- key factors behind other major EV makers' success this year.

The L90 has driven substantial store traffic for Onvo and sparked interest in its first model, the L60, Nio management previously stated.

Firefly launched the Firefly EV on April 19, with deliveries in China commencing on April 29.

On August 14, Firefly began deliveries in Norway and the Netherlands, marking the Nio sub-brand's official entry into overseas markets.

On August 25, Firefly introduced a limited edition of the Firefly EV in China called the "Nomadic Maillard Edition," capped at 333 units, with immediate delivery upon order placement.

On August 27, Firefly president Daniel Jin announced the limited edition sold out within 30 hours.

For Nio's main brand, the lackluster performance stems primarily from the absence of strong new models. However, this could change soon.

Nio commenced pre-sales of its third-generation ES8 large SUV in China on August 21 with aggressive pricing. The official launch is scheduled for Nio Day 2025 at the end of next month.

On August 29, Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li said that customer reservations for the third-generation ES8 SUV are strong, even outperforming those for the Onvo L90.
