Trump 'unilaterally declares' to restore Columbus Day to a federal holiday

Internet reports that Trump said on Sunday that he plans to restore Columbus Day (the second Monday in October) as a U.S. federal holiday. A U.S. president cannot unilaterally cancel or declare a federal holiday, but must get approval from Congress. And Columbus Day is still a federal holiday, but as of last year, Indigenous People's Day has replaced Columbus Day in more than 200 cities and multiple states. Trump said on social media: "I want to bring Columbus Day back. Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all Italians who loved him." Ristorfo Columbus was a famous navigator, explorer and colonist in Europe from the Middle Ages to modern times. Foreign media said that given his colonial history, torture and genocide of indigenous people, many people opposed celebrating Columbus Day. Indigenous People's Day began in the 1990s and has gained momentum since then, including in 2021, when Biden became the first president to officially recognize the holiday with a proclamation.
