BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang unveiled the U9 Xtreme electric supercar, which has claimed the title of world's fastest production vehicle with its formidable performance.
Yangwang debuted the U9 Xtreme on Saturday and began accepting reservations for the car, limited to just 30 units worldwide.
The electric supercar achieved an officially certified top speed of 496.22 km/h (308.3 mph) at Germany's ATP test track, setting a world record for production vehicles and surpassing the 472.41 km/h top speed recorded last month by a Yangwang U9 test vehicle.
Additionally, the U9 Xtreme achieved a lap time of 6 minutes, 59.157 seconds at Germany's Nürburgring circuit, becoming the first pure-electric production vehicle to break the 7-minute mark there.
Built on a 1200-volt high-voltage platform, the U9 Xtreme is the world's first production vehicle to utilize such a platform, Yangwang said.
It features BYD's e4 powertrain system with four motors, each delivering a peak power of 555 kW, providing over 3000 Ps of combined horsepower and achieving a power-to-weight ratio of up to 1217 Ps/t.
The model incorporates BYD's track-grade blade battery with an ultra-high 30C discharge rate, according to Yangwang.
Its tires are specially customized and represent China's first tires capable of withstanding speeds of 500 km/h.
"Xtreme" derives from the word "Extreme," signifies the U9 Xtreme's purpose to transcend limits and explore the absolute boundaries of speed, Yangwang said.
The standard Yangwang U9 was launched in China on February 25, 2024. The two-seat electric supercar currently starts at RMB 1.68 million ($236,120).
It features four motors, each delivering a peak power of 240 kW, for a combined peak output of 960 kW.
Its powertrain produces up to 1,306 Ps and 1,680 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.36 seconds.
In August 2024, the Yangwang U9 achieved a top speed of 375.12 km/h during track testing. Two months later, in October, the electric supercar recorded a top speed of 391.94 km/h.
Late last month, a Yangwang U9 test vehicle set a new global EV top speed record at 472.41 km/h.
Yangwang sold 405 vehicles in August, marking a 30.65 percent year-on-year increase and a 19.47 percent rise from July.
The Yangwang U8 SUV (sport utility vehicle) sold 77 units in August, the U9 electric supercar sold 1 unit, and the U7 sedan sold 327 units.
