Trump's $9 billion bill to cut foreign aid and public broadcasting spending passes House and Senate
Internet reports that Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives overcame some internal resistance and canceled $9 billion in federal spending on foreign aid and public broadcasting. The House voted 216 - 213 early Friday morning to approve the Trump administration's plan, which had previously been approved by the Senate. The cancellation of spending became the first successful "fund recovery operation" implemented by the White House in more than 25 years. The action effectively formalizes the government's move to cut foreign aid programs, including cuts in funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development, which was shut down and merged into the State Department earlier this year. The move also withdraws a $1.1 billion grant from PBS, which owns NPR and PBS, and stops funding for the next two fiscal years. Republicans have long criticized NPR and PBS for their liberal bias.
