Fed Barkin: Not all companies can raise prices due to tariffs
Online reports that Federal Reserve Barkin said that not all companies can raise prices to offset the cost of tariffs, warning that consumer tolerance is low after years of inflation. "What I hear from retailers is that consumers are struggling with money," Balkin said. "That means it's not as easy as you think to pass on prices to consumers." Balkin still believes the U.S. economy is in good shape. He added that consumer spending and corporate investment remained solid. He pointed out that while indicators of consumer confidence were significantly weak, it had not yet dragged down spending. Balkin said he was considering whether tariffs would slow economic growth to the point of curbing inflation. He said this was an experience in 2008, but there were other times that didn't happen.
