U.S. Commerce Secretary: August 1 is the deadline for countries to start paying tariffs to the United States, but "still negotiable"

According to Internet reports, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in an interview with CBS News on Sunday that August 1 is the deadline for countries to start paying tariffs to the United States, but stressed that "after August 1 countries can still continue to negotiate with the United States." Lutnik revealed that some small countries-Latin American countries, Caribbean countries and many African countries-"will apply a benchmark tariff of 10%." The statement may be a relief to these countries, after Trump had previously suggested that their benchmark tax rates might exceed 10%. But he also said that "larger economies have only two options-either open their markets to the United States or pay fair tariffs." (Jin Shi)
