French President: Expresses 'strong' opposition to U.S. decision to impose tariffs
According to online reports, French President Macron issued a document saying that France and the President of the European Commission agreed and expressed "strong" opposition to the United States 'announcement to impose a 30% comprehensive tariff on EU exports starting from August 1. The announcement follows intensive negotiations between the European Commission and the United States over the past few weeks, during which solid proposals were put forward in good faith. On the basis of European unity, the European Commission's determination to firmly defend EU interests is even more needed. This particularly means that if an agreement cannot be reached before August 1, we must speed up the preparation of credible countermeasures and mobilize all available means, including the Anti-Coercion Tool. On this basis, France will fully support the European Commission's position in the negotiations. Negotiations will be further intensified with a view to reaching an agreement acceptable to both sides by August 1, reflecting the mutual respect that the EU and the United States should have as trading partners, and safeguarding the common interests of both sides and their close value chain.
