Volkswagen's Jetta brand will establish a new company in Chengdu, Sichuan, to compete in the Chinese market with greater operational autonomy.

FAW Group, Volkswagen, and the Chengdu Economic Development Zone Management Committee signed a cooperation agreement yesterday in Chengdu to establish the new Jetta brand company, according to an announcement released yesterday.

The new Jetta brand will integrate existing resources, leverage local R&D capabilities and mature supply chain systems in China, and gain more comprehensive decision-making autonomy and operational flexibility, the announcement stated.

This will enable Jetta to achieve faster market responsiveness and deeper localization integration, creating mobility experiences better aligned with consumer needs, FAW-Volkswagen said.

Jetta plans to launch five new models by 2028, including four new energy vehicles (NEVs), with the first model scheduled for release in 2026, according to the statement.

The brand will build upon its domestic market development to diversify its overseas market footprint, the statement added.

In March 2019, FAW-Volkswagen officially launched the new Jetta brand alongside three new Jetta models, initiating the brand's independent operations.

In August 2023, local media outlet Cailian reported that the Jetta brand was in talks with Leapmotor regarding a partnership, with FAW-Volkswagen likely to acquire exclusive rights to one of Leapmotor's platform technologies.
