Trump signs a new tariff executive order, experts warn that "maybe just the beginning"

Internet reports that U.S. President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday local time to adjust reciprocal tariffs in dozens of countries. Experts warn that more tariff increases may be on the horizon. Wendy Cutler, former deputy U.S. trade representative and now senior vice president of the Asia Society's Policy Institute, pointed out: "Particularly worrying is that trading partners will face continued uncertainty-both in dealing with new industry tariffs and on the possibility of additional tariffs if the U.S. government determines that the countries concerned are not implementing the agreement in good faith." Cutler stressed: "There is no doubt that this executive order, together with relevant agreements reached in the past few months, completely tears up the international trade rulebook that was formed after World War II. It remains unknown whether our partners can maintain this system without U.S. participation." Stephen Olson, a senior visiting scholar at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Yusuf Issa in Singapore and former U.S. trade negotiator, shares the same view: "Don't think this is the end... There will almost certainly be more deals and higher tariffs to follow."
