In order to reach a trade agreement with Trump, India has proposed to cut the tariff difference by two-thirds."
Online reported that two sources said that in order to reach a trade agreement with Trump, India has proposed to reduce its tariff differential with the United States from the current nearly 13% to less than 4%, in exchange for Trump's "current and potential" tariff increase exemption. This would mean a 9 percentage point reduction in the average tariff gap between India and the United States (on an all-product basis, excluding trade volume), one of the most radical changes made by the world's fifth-largest economy to reduce trade barriers. The United States is India's largest trading partner, with total bilateral trade of approximately US$129 billion in 2024. The current trade balance is in India's favor, with India's trade surplus with the United States of US$45.7 billion. (Jin Shi)
