GAC Group will unveil a new extended-range system on August 19 that it says will disrupt the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) experience.

The automotive giant has named its extended-range system "Xingyuan" (literally meaning "star source") and stated that the EREV version of its sub-brand Hyptec's Hyptec HL will be launched at that time.

GAC will address the challenges of EREVs with its cutting-edge technologies, ensuring that EREVs do not feel like they are running out of power even when the battery is low, the company said today.

When the battery of an EREV is at a low level, the battery alone cannot provide sufficient power for the vehicle, GAC noted in its statement.

To address the issues of high fuel consumption, insufficient power, and noticeable noise and vibration in EREVs when the battery is low, GAC has developed a solution to eliminate the feeling of low battery power called "Xingyuan," which will redefine the driving experience of such vehicles, it said.

The system will be equipped with GAC's in-house developed range extender, which achieves industry-leading levels of power generation efficiency and fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiency, GAC said.

It has industry-leading continuous power generation capacity, enabling the vehicle to deliver strong power even in low-battery conditions, the automaker said.

GAC has also developed an AI energy control platform that uses strategies such as intelligent energy recovery and instantaneous optimal allocation to deliver a better experience, GAC said.

Hyptec launched the Hyptec HL SUV (sport utility vehicle) on April 12, offering both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and EREV variants. Deliveries of the BEV variant began on April 28.

The company claimed at the time that the Hyptec HL EREV was the EREV with the longest range, equipped with a 60-kWh CATL ternary battery pack and a CLTC range of up to 350 km.

Notably, SAIC Motor's (SHA: 600104) EV unit IM Motors unveiled a range-extended system called "Hengxing" earlier this month, featuring a battery pack with a capacity of up to 66 kWh, capable of delivering a CLTC range of up to 450 kilometers.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) hinted earlier this week that the extended-range version of its X9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) will also feature a CLTC battery range of up to 450 kilometers.

In addition to the Hyper HL, GAC is expected to launch more EREV models.

Last week, a regulatory filing catalog released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed that Hyptec had filed for extended-range versions of the A8 sedan and the Aion V.
