El Salvador's legislature approves constitutional reform that allows indefinite presidential re-election."

Online reports that El Salvador's legislature has approved a comprehensive constitutional reform that allows the president to be re-elected for an indefinite period of time, which effectively allows President Nayb Buker to remain in power beyond the end of his current term. El Salvador's Legislative Assembly said Bukel's New Thought Party and its allies voted 57 - 3 to approve five reforms, including extending the presidential term from five to six years and eliminating the runoff vote. Opponents warn that the move will concentrate power and threaten democratic institutions because the changes remove term limits that have long restricted executive power. New Ideology MP Anna Figueroa proposed ending Bucker's current term two years early so that presidential and congressional elections can be held on the same schedule. If approved, Bucker's current term will end on June 1, 2027, rather than June 1, 2029.
