Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) has launched a limited edition of its ET5 Touring wagon -- the Nio brand's best-selling model over recent months -- following two similar explorations by its Firefly sub-brand.

The company rolled out the black-themed ET5 Touring today, inspired by the sci-fi film Tron: Ares premiering in China today, with only 555 units available.

Nio is the film's official co-promotional partner and has already displayed ET5 Touring and ET5 models featuring modifications based on the movie at select stores earlier this month.

Priced at RMB 316,000 ($44,370) including a 100-kWh battery pack, the limited-edition ET5 Touring costs RMB 18,000, or 6.04 percent, more than the standard model's starting price of RMB 298,000.

Under the BaaS (Battery as a Service) plan, it starts at RMB 208,000 with a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 1,128.

The limited-edition ET5 Touring features a black exterior, exclusive decals, a Moon theme package, roof rails, 20-inch wheels, and orange brake calipers.

Deliveries for the limited-edition model will commence in late October.

Customers who place orders for the limited-edition model by October 31 will receive benefits including a free AC charging kit, five years of free NOP+ (Navigate on Pilot Plus) usage, and a comfort package valued at RMB 9,500.

The launch of the limited-edition ET5 Touring represents Nio's latest exploration in generating marketing buzz for a model at low cost.

The company's sub-brand Firefly launched the Nomadic Maillard special edition Firefly EV on August 25, limited to 333 units.

On October 11, Firefly launched the Night Creature special edition Firefly EV, capped at 666 units.

The ET5 Touring targets a niche market in China that was previously small, yet the model has unexpectedly achieved success and is now Nio's best-selling vehicle.

The ET5 Touring delivered 5,048 units in September, surpassing the ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle) for the fourth consecutive month as Nio brand's top-selling model, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Previously, Nio had introduced new variants for several models, including the ET5 Touring, at lower costs.

On July 4, Nio launched the Champion Edition for the ET5, ET5 Touring, and EC6 coupe SUV to commemorate the company's first-ever annual drivers' championship title in the 2015 Formula E Championship.
