IMF No. 2 Gopinath will leave at the end of August
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a statement that Gita Gopinath, its second-in-command person, will leave her post at the end of August and return to Harvard University, the Internet reported. The IMF said IMF Managing Director Georgieva would appoint Gopinath's successor "in due course." Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019, becoming the organization's first female chief economist, and was promoted to First Vice President in January 2022. The U.S. Treasury Department had no immediate comment. The candidate for the IMF's managing director has traditionally been chosen by European countries, while the candidate for the first deputy managing director is recommended by the U.S. Treasury Department.
