The United States demands that the EU make unbalanced trade concessions, which may trigger EU countermeasures
Internet reports that during US-European trade negotiations, the United States asked the EU to make unilateral concessions that EU officials viewed as unbalanced. If the terms of a potential agreement do not improve, the EU will make a difficult decision whether to take countermeasures. According to people familiar with the matter, the best-case scenario remains for an agreement on principles to allow negotiations to continue beyond the early July deadline. Washington's demands can be grouped into three categories. The first category is measures related to fish export quotas, which EU officials say may be inconsistent with WTO rules. The second category is non-mutual tariff-related measures. The third category is a series of economic security requirements that EU officials describe as far-fetched. People familiar with the matter said that even if a deal is reached, many of Trump's tariffs will remain unchanged. The EU has been seeking a mutually beneficial agreement, and it will evaluate any final outcome and decide at that stage how much inequality-if any-it is willing to accept. (Jin Shi)
