United Nations launches 'survival plan' to deal with Trump administration's threat of funding cuts
Internet reports that in the face of the threat of divestment from the United States, the largest donor country, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres is implementing a comprehensive reform plan involving $700 million in spending cuts. The plan calls for a 20% reduction in spending and staffing, which will reduce the United Nations 'annual budget of $3.7 billion to its lowest level since 2018, and approximately 3000 positions are expected to be abolished. Although officials have linked the reform plan to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the scale of the cuts directly reflects the threat of disruption in U.S. funding-the United States has traditionally borne 22% of the United Nations budget. Trump has suspended dues and withdrawn from multiple United Nations agencies, and a broader review is expected to lead to further funding cuts.
