EU considers suspending political dialogue and trade preferences with Israel
According to Politico, some provisions of the EU-Israel Joint Agreement may be suspended due to Israel's violations of human rights obligations in Gaza. Draft internal documents drafted by the EU's External Action Agency show that the EU is considering a range of measure options, including a "complete suspension" of the EU-Israel Association Agreement involving cooperation in trade and other fields. Other proposals include a partial suspension of the agreement-a suspension of the "political dialogue" between Brussels and the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which requires the unanimous consent of all 27 member states. However, the document pointed out that the "trade chapter in the suspension agreement will cancel preferential treatment for Israeli products to enter the EU market and can be approved by the Council of the European Union with a specified majority." This option is more likely to be approved. A comprehensive ban on the import of products from illegal settlements in the West Bank requires the consent of all member states, but the document states that each country can implement the policy on its own.
