US SEC appoints Kevin Muhlendorf as new inspector general

According to online reports, according to an official announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that Kevin Muhlendorf will officially become the agency's new inspector general on July 28. Mr. Muhlendorf has served as an attorney for the SEC and the Justice Department. For the past nine years, he has been a partner at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, D.C., focusing on representing individuals and entities in white-collar criminal defense and government investigations in criminal and civil securities enforcement cases. Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to the position of Deputy Inspector General. In private practice, Mr. Muhlendorf often chaired sensitive internal investigations and provided compliance advice to clients. From 2023 to 2024, he was assigned to Wiley Rein as acting Inspector General for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA), leading approximately 30 auditors and special investigators to conduct investigations and issue financial and performance audit reports. He also designed and implemented a pilot project to reward whistleblowers.
