Fitch: U.S. fiscal outlook remains challenging

Online reports that Fitch said that without major spending reforms, the U.S. fiscal outlook remains challenging. Fitch said that based on its baseline forecast, by 2025, the U.S. general government fiscal deficit will fall to 7.1% of GDP from nearly 8% in 2024. However, by 2026, the total government deficit will rise to 7.6% of GDP. "We expect the fiscal deficit to remain high over the next few years because we do not expect significant additional fiscal policy changes during the rest of the Trump administration's term," Fitch said. The agency also said "meaningful mandatory welfare reform is critical to enhancing the sustainability of public finances in the medium term," adding that the Congressional Budget Office expects rising social protection and Medicare costs to add 2 percent to the deficit over the next decade.
