Malaysia's National Energy Company reveals that illegal cryptocurrency mining has caused a surge in power theft, an increase of 300%
On May 12, Tenaga Nasional Berhad issued a statement on May 12, 2025 stating that between 2018 and 2024, the number of power theft cases related to illegal cryptocurrency mining in the country surged from 610 to 2,397 cases, an increase of 300%. These acts of stealing subsidized electricity by tampering with meters have had a serious impact on the stability of the grid and caused the company to lose hundreds of millions of dollars. Recently, Malaysian authorities launched a joint law enforcement operation across the country and seized many illegal mining cases, including 45 Bitcoin mining machine dens seized in Bandar Alam. In response to this problem, Guoneng has deployed a smart meter network to monitor abnormal electricity consumption in real time, and at the same time, under the Electricity Supply Law, violations are punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of US$212,000. Data shows that some owners received electricity bills of up to $278,400 because tenants privately set up mining machines. A similar situation has occurred in countries such as Kuwait. After investigating more than 1,000 illegal mining sites last month, the country launched an investigation into 116 people this week. These activities have caused a sudden increase in pressure on the local power grid and caused widespread power outages.
