US student admits to hacking into education technology company and stealing tens of millions of user data

Internet reports that Matthew D., a 19-year-old student from Massachusetts, USA. Lane pleaded guilty to federal hacking charges. Lane breached the system of a major education technology company by stealing login credentials, stealing the personal information of more than 60 million students and 10 million teachers, including sensitive data such as social security numbers, medical records and academic performance. According to the indictment, Lane conspired with an Illinois associate to extort approximately $2.85 million in cryptocurrency ransom from the victim company. Although the indictment did not directly name it, the details of the case are highly consistent with the data breach disclosed by educational software company PowerSchool in September 2024. PowerSchool previously admitted paying ransom to hackers, but did not disclose the exact amount. The case is currently being heard in the Federal District Court of Massachusetts, and the specific sentence has not yet been announced.
