The U.S. Secret Service plans to confiscate US$225 million in encryption assets from a cryptographic fraud and money laundering network, setting a record for the highest amount recovered in a single time

The Internet reported that according to an official announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of the Prosecutor for the District of Colombia filed a civil confiscation lawsuit in the federal court, seeking the confiscation of more than US$225.3 million worth of cryptocurrency. The indictment shows that the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation used blockchain analysis and other technical means to identify that the cryptocurrencies were related to fund theft and money laundering activities in cryptocurrency investment fraud cases such as "pig killing plates". The indictment alleges that the cryptocurrency addresses involved constituted a complex on-chain money laundering network that carried out hundreds of thousands of transactions, specifically used to conceal the source and flow of fraud proceeds. Scammers disperse funds through a large number of cryptocurrency addresses and accounts, creating a fog of funds. The investigation has confirmed that dozens of victims across the United States were deceived by mistakenly believing in fake investment platforms. There are more than 400 suspected victims around the world, and the amount of losses in a single case reaches millions of dollars. The San Francisco branch of the Secret Service pointed out that the case set a record for the highest amount of a single cryptocurrency recovery in the agency's 160 years since its establishment. The case was led by a team of prosecutors from the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Division of the Ministry of Justice, and stablecoin issuer Tether provided proactive assistance in the investigation.
