"Federal Reserve's megaphone": The Federal Reserve's independence is again challenged, and it is not expected to cut interest rates this month

Internet reports that some economic advisers such as Treasury Secretary Bessant generally advocate maintaining the independence of the Federal Reserve. For example, in a recent Fox Business interview, Besent refused to criticize Trump over the building renovation. But other advisers and external allies have been exploring legal ways to remove Powell since before the election. "During his tenure, no one is willing to make major renovations to one historic building, let alone two historic buildings that require extensive renovations," Powell said in testimony last month. Previously, Trump pushed for lower interest rates on a broader scale to reduce government borrowing costs. The Fed is not expected to cut interest rates at its meeting later this month, but Powell has signaled it could do so later this year if inflation performs well or the labor market is weak. Trump wants to reduce the cost of servicing the federal deficit, and his tax cuts could widen it. But outside extreme situations such as war, central banks in advanced economies will resist such pressure. They believe that stabilizing inflation is crucial to maintaining confidence in the country's currency.
