US SEC Commissioner Says Most Crypto Assets Are Not Securities, Support Issuing Clear Guidance

Internet reported that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Hester Peirce said on SEC Speaks: "Most crypto assets currently on the market are not securities." She added: "Although many crypto assets are currently outside traditional financial markets, the development of crypto assets is accelerating as traditional intermediaries are gradually entering." She criticized the SEC's past practices in crypto regulation, saying that "the committee's approach to crypto assets in recent years has avoided sound regulatory practices" and "failed to provide useful guidance." "The committee is now committed to providing clear guidance," she emphasized. For example,"staff recently clarified that they believe certain Meme coins and stablecoins are not securities""because they do not confer economic rights on commercial entities or other committing parties." She supports the issuance of further guidance to clarify which activities do not fall within the scope of securities laws.
