The Yangwang U9 electric supercar, from BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) sub-brand Yangwang, is already a performance beast. Now the brand wants to take it one step further.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) today released the latest catalog of vehicle models set to be approved for sale, seeking public feedback, with the new version of the Yangwang U9 electric supercar included.
The public can submit feedback between August 9 and 15. Being included in this catalog is the last major regulatory step before a vehicle model can be sold in China.
The Yangwang U9 has only one page in the catalog, with the product model number QCJ7000AFBEV3 and the production address listed as BYD's Shenzhen factory.
The electric supercar is equipped with four motors, the same as the current model, but each motor's power has been doubled.
The peak power of all four motors in the new Yangwang U9 is 555 kW, which is 2.3 times that of the 240 kW in the currently available U9.
This is expected to further enhance the acceleration performance of the electric supercar, which can currently accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.36 seconds.
The new Yangwang U9 may use BYD's high-speed motor technology to achieve higher power.
On March 17, the company unveiled a motor with a speed of up to 30,511 rpm, which it claimed was the highest among mass-produced motors and the first to exceed 30,000 rpm.
The motor has a peak power of up to 580 kW, which is the highest among mass-produced motors. The Han L EV and Tang L EV, which went on sale on April 9, are the first models to be equipped with this motor.
The new Yangwang U9 is 4,966 mm long, 2,029 mm wide, 1,311 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, consistent with the currently available Yangwang U9.
It has a curb weight of 2,480 kg and supports a maximum speed of 350 km/h.
It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by BYD's battery subsidiary FinDreams Battery.
The Yangwang U9 was initially launched on February 25, 2024, as the brand's second model following the U8 luxury SUV (sport utility vehicle).
The U9 is currently priced at RMB 1.68 million ($233,840) in China.
On March 27, the brand launched its third model, the U7 sedan, with a starting price of RMB 628,000.
At the end of July, the brand began pre-sales of the U8L luxury SUV with a pre-sales price of RMB 1.3 million.
Yangwang sold 339 vehicles in July, a year-on-year decrease of 22.78 percent but a month-on-month increase of 65.37 percent, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The Yangwang U8 sold 80 units in July, the U9 sold 6 units, and the U7 sold 253 units.
