Automakers' share of China NEV market in Sept: BYD leads with 26.7%, Tesla 5th with 5.5%

BYD (HKG: 1211) maintained its position as China's largest new energy-vehicle (NEV) maker in September, with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) continuing to rank 5th.
BYD's passenger NEV retail sales totaled 347,353 units in September, down 10.2 percent year-on-year but up 12.0 percent month-on-month, according to rankings released Tuesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The company maintained its top position with a 26.7 percent market share in September, down from 27.8 percent in August and lower than the 34.4 percent share recorded in the same month last year.
Tesla's retail sales in China totaled 71,525 units in August, marking a 0.9 percent year-on-year decline but a 25.1 percent increase from July.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker held a 5.5 percent share of China's NEV market in September, ranking fifth -- unchanged from August.
This share was higher than its 5.1 percent in August but lower than the 6.4 percent recorded in the same period last year.
Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) recorded NEV retail sales of 150,570 units in September, up 68.3 percent year-on-year and 12.0 percent month-on-month.
Its 11.6 percent market share in September maintained its second-place ranking in NEV retail sales, though down from 12.1 percent in August.
In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
BYD and Geely produce both BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only makes BEVs.
Changan Automobile ranked third in China's NEV market in September with 84,237 NEV retail sales and a 6.5 percent share.
Xiaomi EV maintained its 10th position in the top 10 NEV retail sales list, achieving a 3.2 percent share with 41,948 units sold.
Xiaomi EV first entered this ranking with August sales, securing a 3.3 percent share with 36,396 units sold.
From January to September, BYD led China's NEV market with 2,542,239 retail sales and a 28.7 percent market share.
Geely ranked second in China's NEV market during the same period with 1,092,148 NEV retail sales and a 12.3 percent market share.
Changan ranked third in China's NEV market during the same period with 579,755 NEV sales and a 6.5 percent market share.
Tesla placed fifth in China's NEV market from January to September with 432,704 units sold and a 4.9 percent market share.
In the overall passenger vehicle market including traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked first in retail sales in September with a 15.5 percent market share.
Geely ranked second in August with 232,460 units sold and a 10.4 percent market share.
Changan ranked third with 138,655 units sold and a 6.2 percent market share.
