More than $123,000 in cryptocurrency was stolen after an American tourist mistakenly boarded a fake Uber in London

On May 21, it was reported that an American tourist lost more than $123,000 in cryptocurrency in a suspected premeditated theft in the West End of London after a brief stay in the city and going out for night play. Jacob Irwin-Cline from Portland, Oregon, called an Uber after leaving the nightclub TheRoxy in Soho at around 1:30 a.m. on May 9 while he was on a two-day stopover. Police said a driver learned his name from the app and intercepted him at the scene. Later, Irwin-Cline applied to view the club's closed-circuit television surveillance footage, which showed he was boarding a dark sedan rather than the Toyota Prius shown on his Uber app. The driver then handed him a cigarette, presumably containing sedatives. Under the influence of the drug, Irwin-Cline accidentally revealed the unlocking password of his mobile phone and allowed the other party to access his encrypted account. He was then abandoned in an unfamiliar location in London. Police later confirmed that the attacker had direct access to his encrypted wallet after forcibly logging into his Revolut account.
