GWM's (HKG: 2333) electric vehicle (EV) brand Ora will unveil its first electric SUV (sport utility vehicle), the Ora 5, in three days, intensifying its efforts in the EV market after years of relative quiet.

Ora announced today that its new SUV model is officially named Ora 5 and will debut on September 25 during an event scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm Beijing time.

A poster released by the brand on Weibo today suggests the Ora 5 will primarily target urban mobility needs.

Ora began teasing the model earlier this month, with brand general manager Lv Wenbin launching a naming contest on Weibo on September 12, ultimately selecting Ora 5.

This naming strategy also facilitates maintaining the model name for its upcoming overseas market entry, Lv said today.

The model appeared in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology regulatory catalog earlier this month under the name Ora Cat, mirroring the naming convention of models like the Ora Good Cat.

According to its filing information, the Ora 5 measures 4,471 mm in length, 1,833/1,844 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm.

The model features a single electric motor with a peak power output of 150 kW. Its curb weight ranges from 1,540 to 1,655 kg, supporting a top speed of 170 km/h.

The Ora brand was launched in 2018, targeting the compact EV market priced below RMB 100,000 ($14,060).

The brand has not launched any all-new products for over two years, with August sales standing at 5,223 units.

On June 20, GWM held a mid-year dealer strategy meeting at its headquarters in Baoding, Hebei province, where the revival of the Ora brand was a core topic, according to a June 26 report by local media AutoPix.

GWM informed dealers that Ora would rebuild its independent sales channels and showcased four all-new Ora models, including several SUVs and a new sedan-crossover hybrid, the report stated.

GWM planned at least four new Ora models, shifting focus beyond exclusively targeting the female market, the report indicated.
