Momenta will test Level 4 autonomous robotaxis with Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) in Munich, Germany next year, marking Uber's platform integration with another Chinese autonomous driving company.
The two companies announced the plan today in a joint statement. The collaboration will integrate Momenta's AI-driven autonomous driving technology into Uber's global platform.
Uber and Momenta aim to expand Level 4 autonomous driving technology to other European cities, with testing in Munich expected to commence in 2026.
Momenta has become a partner to leading German brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, further solidifying its position within Bavaria and the broader German automotive industry, the Chinese startup stated.
"Testing L4 autonomous vehicles in Munich allows us to showcase how Momenta’s AI-driven Robotaxi technology can transform urban mobility," said Momenta CEO Cao Xudong.
Momenta is executing a "two-leg strategy" -- deploying ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) with OEM partners while advancing robotaxi technology -- laying the groundwork for large-scale practical applications, it said.
Through OEM partnerships, Momenta's ADAS systems have been deployed in 400,000 vehicles already sold.
Additionally, Momenta operates a robotaxi service in Shanghai and plans to achieve commercial deployment without onboard safety operators by year-end.
Founded in 2016, Momenta's investors include SAIC Motor (SHA: 600104), Toyota, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Nio Capital.
In May this year, Momenta entered a robotaxi partnership with Uber, set to launch first in Europe by 2026. The initial robotaxi service will feature onboard safety operators.
Momenta is one of several Chinese companies partnering with Uber on robotaxi initiatives. Previously, firms including WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD), Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU), and Pony AI (NASDAQ: PONY) have established similar collaborations with the ride-hailing giant.
