Establishing a dedicated department: According to reports, Arm, a subsidiary of SoftBank, plans to establish an AI chip department in the spring of 2025 and produce prototype chips. This move marks the company's official entry into the fiercely competitive downstream AI chip market.
Production partner: Arm is in negotiations with chip manufacturers including TSMC to mass produce these AI chips. Large scale production is expected to begin in the autumn of 2025.
Market potential and stock price rise: It is understood that Arm's chips are currently used in about 99% of high-end smartphones. Since the beginning of this year, Arm's stock price has risen by nearly 45%, with a market value exceeding 113 billion US dollars.
SoftBank's strategic investment: Led by Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Sun, SoftBank has great expectations for AI technology and plans to invest $960 million next year to strengthen its generative AI computing infrastructure. SoftBank also plans to establish AI data centers powered by its own chips in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East before 2026.
