Tesla sells 57,152 cars in China in Aug, down 10% year-on-year

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) continued to see lower retail sales in the Chinese domestic market last month compared to the same period last year, as the weak trend persists.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker recorded 57,152 retail sales in China in August, down 9.93 percent from 63,456 units in the same period last year, though up 40.71 percent from July's 40,617 units, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This marks Tesla's sixth year-on-year decline in China retail sales this year. From January to August, it only saw year-on-year growth in China sales in March and June.

Tesla operates a factory in Shanghai producing the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, serving both domestic customers and acting as an export hub.

The factory exported 26,040 vehicles in August, a 12.04 percent year-on-year increase but a 4.51 percent decrease from July.

Tesla's production pattern involves manufacturing vehicles for export during the first half of the quarter and for the domestic market in the latter half, the company had said.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales totaled 1,101,000 units in August, marking a 7.5 percent year-on-year increase and an 11.6 percent rise from July, according to the CPCA.

BEV retail sales in August came in at 686,000 units, up 17.2 percent year-on-year and up 13.0 percent month-on-month.

This indicates Tesla's share of China's NEV market were 5.19 percent in August, up from 4.12 percent in July. Its share of China's BEV market stood at 8.33 percent in August, up from 6.69 percent in July.

Including exports, Tesla China's wholesale sales in August totaled 83,192 units, down 4.04 percent from 86,697 units in the same period last year but up 22.55 percent from July's 67,886 units.

Model Y wholesale sales in August totaled 58,888 units, up 4.58 percent year-on-year and up 28.47 percent month-on-month.

Model 3 wholesale sales in August were 24,304 units, down 20.02 percent year-on-year but up 10.23 percent from July.

Sales figures for these two models in China are not yet available.

From January to August, Tesla sold 361,179 vehicles in China, a 6.91 percent decrease year-on-year.

Its Shanghai factory exported 154,373 vehicles from January to August, down 22.60 percent year-on-year.

Including exports, Tesla China's wholesale sales totaled 515,552 vehicles from January to August, down 12.24 percent year-on-year.

During this period, Model Y wholesale sales were 318,760 units, down 10.13 percent year-on-year. Model 3 sales totaled 196,792 units, down 15.45 percent year-on-year.
