MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, has officially launched the redesigned MG4 compact hatchback in China as the brand shifts greater focus to the competitive domestic market.
The all-new MG4 was rolled out today on the opening day of the 2025 Chengdu auto show. As one of China's most affordable electric vehicles (EVs), its official guide price starts at RMB 68,800 ($9,650), with discounted prices beginning at RMB 65,800.
MG offers a variant of the updated MG4 equipped with a semi-solid-state battery pack, starting at just RMB 102,800, discounted to RMB 99,800 (about $14,000).
When MG began pre-sales for the new MG4 earlier this month, it said that pricing for the semi-solid-state battery variant would be announced in September, with mass deliveries commencing within the year.
The semi-solid-state battery has garnered significant attention for the model, though it's worth noting that this battery -- developed by SAIC-backed startup QingTao Energy -- does not deliver a breakthrough in range.
The semi-solid-state battery in the new MG4 has an energy density of just 180 Wh/kg and a CLTC range of 537 kilometers, according to multiple local media reports. MG has not disclosed the battery's capacity or specific range figures.
By comparison, Nio's 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery pack has an energy density of 261 Wh/kg, enabling the ET7 mid-to-large size sedan to achieve over 1,000 kilometers of range.
Other variants of the new MG4 feature lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with capacities of 42.8 kWh or 53.9 kWh, delivering CLTC ranges between 437 km and 530 km.
Built on SAIC's E3 pure-electric architecture, the model measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.
It features a single motor delivering 120 kW peak power and 250 Nm peak torque, with a top speed of 160 km/h.
Originally named MG Mulan in China, the MG4 is a compact EV launched by MG in September 2022, positioned as a global electric vehicle.
It debuted overseas under the MG4 Electric name at the time of its launch in China, later adopting the MG4 EV name in China as well.
