U.S. and India are close to reaching a provisional trade deal, Indian tariffs are expected to drop below 20%

According to online reports, people familiar with the matter revealed that the United States is working to reach a temporary trade agreement with India, which plans to reduce the additional tariff rate imposed on the country to below 20%. People familiar with the matter said that unlike many countries that received tax increase notices this week, India is not expected to receive a tariff request letter, and the two sides may announce the trade arrangement through a joint statement. The interim agreement will create the conditions for continued negotiations, giving India room to resolve outstanding issues ahead of a comprehensive agreement expected this fall. People familiar with the matter said the statement could set a benchmark tariff rate lower than 20 percent (originally proposed as 26 percent) and include provisions that would allow the two sides to continue negotiations on a final agreed rate. The exact timing of the interim agreement is not yet clear. If it is finally reached, India will become one of the few trading partners to reach an agreement with the Trump administration.
