BYD Sept NEV sales down 5.52% year-on-year as hybrids continue to decline

BYD (HKG: 1211) saw a rare year-on-year decline in new energy-vehicle (NEV) sales as plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models continued to fall.
The company sold 396,270 NEVs in September, down 5.52 percent year-on-year, though up 6.06 percent from August, according to data released today.
This marks BYD's first year-on-year decline in monthly NEV sales since March 2024, following two consecutive months of sub-1 percent growth, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
BYD's NEVs include both passenger and commercial vehicles. Passenger NEVs sold 393,060 units in September, down 5.88 percent year-on-year, though up 5.80 percent from August.
BYD's commercial NEVs sold 3,210 units in September, up 76.08 percent year-on-year and up 51.06 percent month-on-month.
Its passenger battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales totaled 205,050 units in September, rising 24.31 percent year-on-year and 2.74 percent month-on-month.
Passenger plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales came in at 188,010 units, down 25.58 percent year-on-year -- marking the sixth consecutive month of year-on-year decline -- though up 9.36 percent from August.
The company sold 71,256 NEVs overseas in September, a 115.85 percent increase year-on-year but an 11.83 percent decrease from August.
Beyond being China's largest NEV manufacturer, BYD also ranks as China's second-largest power battery producer.
BYD's power battery and energy storage battery installations in September totaled about 23.200 GWh, marking a 17.17 percent year-on-year increase and a 0.11 percent rise from August.
Third-quarter performance
In the third quarter, BYD's NEV sales totaled 1,114,192 units, representing a year-on-year decline of 1.82 percent and a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 2.70 percent.
Its passenger NEVs recorded sales of 1,105,591 units in the third quarter, down 2.10 percent year-on-year and 1.91 percent quarter-on-quarter.
Commercial NEVs sold 8,601 units in the third quarter, up 52.61 percent year-on-year but down 52.16 percent from the second quarter.
BYD's passenger BEV sales were 582,522 units in the third quarter, rising 31.37 percent year-on-year but declining 4.03 percent from the second quarter.
Third-quarter passenger PHEV sales were 523,069 units, down 23.73 percent year-on-year, though up 0.56 percent from the second quarter.
BYD's overseas NEV sales in the third quarter totaled 232,806 units, surging 146.42 percent year-on-year but declining 9.83 percent from the second quarter.
BYD's power battery and energy storage battery installations in the third quarter were about 68.725 GWh, up 24.58 percent year-on-year but down 16.16 percent from the second quarter.
Year-to-date performance
From January to September, BYD sold 3,260,146 NEVs, a year-on-year increase of 18.64 percent.
Passenger NEVs accounted for 3,218,862 units during this period, up 17.63 percent year-on-year.
Commercial NEVs reached 41,284 units, surging 259.80 percent year-on-year.
Passenger BEVs reached 1,605,903 units, up 37.31 percent year-on-year.
Passenger PHEVs reached 1,612,959 units, up 2.94 percent year-on-year.
BYD sold 697,072 vehicles overseas from January to September, marking a 134.01 percent increase year-on-year.
Its installed capacity of power batteries and energy storage batteries reached about 203.251 GWh during the same period, up 59.14 percent year-on-year.
