Analysts: The actual cost cuts of the DOGE unit led by Musk may be well below $10 billion

Online reported that yesterday, Musk posted on X, saying,"As my time as a special government employee comes to an end, I want to thank President Trump for giving me the opportunity to cut wasteful spending. The mission of the Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE) will only strengthen over time as it will become a way of life for the entire government." The analysis pointed out that advisory committees such as DOGE have no authority to cut federal spending, close agencies or cancel contracts. Their recommendations need to be implemented by the president or appointed officials, and most cost-cutting measures require legislation by Congress. This means Trump should have pushed for legislation to legalize DOGE reform, but he did not. The recently passed budget in the House approved only $9.3 billion in institutional cuts, less than 5% of Musk's original $2 trillion annual throttling target. "DOGE has no thunder or rain," said Jessica Riedl, budget analyst at the Manhattan Institute."Actual cuts may be well below $10 billion." Political reality exposes the essence of DOGE. This may be just a superficial cost-cutting show, leaving the "stubborn disease" of the federal budget intact. Members of Congress firmly control various agencies in the executive branch, and even Republicans are reluctant to let vigilantes like Musk interfere with their turf. (Jin Shi)
