Chinese electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) developer Ehang (NASDAQ: EH) has rolled out its next-generation VT35 model, targeting low-altitude intercity travel with longer flight range.
The company launched the pilotless passenger eVTOL at an event in Hefei, Anhui province today. It's an upgraded lift-and-cruise model based on the earlier VT30 prototype, designed for medium-to-long-range applications including intercity, cross-sea, and cross-mountain transportation.
The standard VT30 model carries an official Chinese market price of RMB 6.5 million ($910,000), higher than the RMB 2.39 million price tag of Ehang's current flagship product, the EH216-S.
The VT35 will join the EH216-S, focused on urban air mobility, to build a comprehensive intelligent air transportation network covering short-, medium-, and long-range scenarios, said Ehang founder, chairman, and CEO Hu Huazhi.
The product features a tandem-wing layout with a two-seat configuration. It employs eight distributed lift propellers for vertical takeoff and landing, transitioning to propulsion propellers and fixed wings for efficient cruise flight.
The VT35 boasts a full-load design range of about 200 kilometers. Compared to its predecessor, the VT-30, it features a more compact footprint -- with a length and wingspan of about 8 meters, a height of about 3 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of 950 kilograms.
The VT35 is compatible with existing EH216-S vertical takeoff and landing airports and can utilize diverse urban landing sites including parks, rooftops, and parking lots.
This enhances infrastructure utilization and supports seamless intercity air transportation between urban centers, Ehang said.
In March, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) accepted Ehang's application for a Type Certificate (TC) for the VT35 eVTOL.
The model is currently undergoing airworthiness certification, with internal testing and flight trials progressing.
Ehang plans to leverage the VT35 platform to launch additional products, such as a tilt-rotor model.
At today's event, Ehang signed cooperation agreements with several partners to advance the procurement, promotion, and operation of the VT35.
A platform company under the Hefei government has placed purchase orders for the VT35, according to the company.
Ehang signed an investment cooperation agreement with the Hefei government in August to establish a VT35 product center in Hefei.
