Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) has commenced assembly of the Starray EM-i hybrid SUV (sport utility vehicle) in Indonesia, marking a milestone for the Chinese automaker's overseas operations.

The Starray EM-i is a model under Geely's sub-brand Geely Galaxy, known as the Starship 7 EM-i in its home market of China.

The model commenced mass production at Geely's KD (Knocked Down) plant in Purwakarta, Indonesia, at the end of September, the company announced yesterday.

KD refers to localized assembly efforts using disassembled components, typically encompassing CKD (Completely Knocked Down) and SKD (Semi Knocked Down).

Geely Galaxy E5 and Geely Xingyuan will also be produced at the facility, the company said. The Geely Galaxy E5 is rebranded as Geely EX5 in Indonesia.

Xingyuan, a popular compact hatchback under Geely Galaxy, received its 2026 model year update yesterday.

The Starship 7 EM-i was launched in Australia last month and will be rolled out in nearly 20 countries including Indonesia, Thailand, South Africa, Mexico, and Italy later this year, Geely said.

First launched in China last December, the compact SUV measures 4,740 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a 2,755 mm wheelbase.

Currently offered in five variants in China, its starting prices are RMB 97,800 ($13,710), RMB 107,800, RMB 110,800, RMB 120,800, and RMB 130,800.

The Chinese-market model features lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, delivering a 120-km battery range. With a full tank and fully charged battery, the combined range reaches 1,420 km.

Geely announced its official entry into the Indonesian market in January, partnering with local partner PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) to advance local production system development.

The Chinese automaker commenced local pre-sales of the EX5 at Indonesia's February auto show and held a delivery ceremony for its 1,000th EX5 on April 19.

In May, Geely's Puwakarta plant completed trial production of its first EX5.
